My NBI Webcast Seminar Presentation: ‘Administering a Small Estate’

NBI

I recently recorded a seminar presentation for National Business Institute (NBI) on the topic of “Administering a Small Estate.” NBI is a continuing legal education (CLE) provider for professionals. The presentation aired on October 1, 2014 and is now available as an on-demand webcast from NBI.

I co-presented the seminar along with attorney Kimberly M. Hanlon. Kimberly is an outstanding Minneapolis-based estate planning, probate and business law attorney.

Our 6-hour presentation covered a wide range of topics relating to small estates — a review of the variety of state laws, when and how to use affidavits, when to use probate instead and how to effectively counsel clients in selecting and implementing various procedures.

While this was intended as a national presentation, I also highlighted that Illinois recently passed a major change to the small estate affidavit section of the Illinois Probate Act. The new small estate affidavit procedure will apply to estates with a date of death on or after January 1, 2015. I plan to write in more detail about the new affidavit procedure soon.
